From The Mind of Sean Pettit
External Vacancy (EVAC) is a multidisciplinary initiative focused on expanding the ways in which we interact with our environment to develop design, artwork, and experiences.
“With the help of like-minded artists, we set off on a quest to build a fort-like space on the top of a high mountain peak in British Columbia. The build was dictated by the environment, and the environment was only rocks. So a dry stack method was used to create our space that was to seamlessly blend with its surroundings.
We brought together a group of talented minds to help bring this vision of utopia to life. Each individual with their own unique take on the mountains and what they have to offer.
We missioned into the mountains over many months, rearranging rocks for days at a time till our protective space took form from the harsh environment. The more time we spent interacting with this environment the more we learned from it. It taught us to be present and to focus on what's in front of us. Body and mind working in perfect harmony in our most primal state of being. It was everything we needed to feel human in the most primal way.
After our mission was completed and the snow buried our utopia for the winter, we tasked everyone involved in the making of this space with creating something based on their experience. An object, a sound, or visuals that could be translated and shared through an exhibition.
We teamed up with Outdoor Research to help in supplying us gear to withstand our purpose in the mountains during this expedition.” - Sean Pettit
